Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears

As of late I have been on a James Brown bender. His music is remarkable, it truly has healing powers. Whether it’s subtle influence or outright emulation, I cant help but grin like a Cheshire cat when I hear someone channeling his music. Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is, is the first LP from Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears mixes equal parts scorn and heartbreak, and a dash of misogyny to produce a solid modern soul album.

Mr. Lewis has a distinct admiration for Mr. Brown. On tracks like “Sugarfoot,” triumphant horns and “call and response,” hollerin’, between the band and it’s manic leader, allude to “The Godfather’s” musical impact.  Fellow Austiner, Jim Eno (Drummer for Spoon), produced the album and has really helped to tighten the groups sound.

Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears will be in San Jose on August 8th for the San Jose Jazz Festival, and will travel to LA on the 31st to play the Troubador. -ND
