Listening to the Crocodiles is like having a molding fuzzy peach rubbed in your ear. That might not sound too comfortable but one listen to the Crocodile’s album, Summer of Hate (2009) and you’ll wish your name was James (* yes, that was a James and the Giant Peach reference*). Stereogum wrote the 80s summoning-fuzz-punk band “sounds-in a great way-like Velvet Underground-swinging Jesus & Mary Chain.”
The Crocodiles have joined the ranks of Crystal Stilts and Black Lips as one of my favorite distortion loving retro bands but their poppy bounce gives them a unique twist. “Neon Jesus” is one of the most catchy and well written tracks. By the time I heard the hook, “I just want your bright salvation come and put your nails in me, lead my body from temptation, on your cross I know I am free,” itunes had taken my $9.90.
Crocodiles will be playing at the Rickshaw Stop next week, Wednesday Aug 19th, @ 8pm be sure to check them out and pick up Summer of Hate.-TC
