Youth Novels ( LL Recordings, 2008), is the title and core of the Swedish indie darling, Lykke Li’s, first album. Inside is a collection of extremely-personal-poppy tunes which unfold like an x-rated “Dawsons Creek” love story written and sung by Bjork and Erykah Badu.
The eccentric and seductive voice of Lykke Li powers this creatively patchwork album. Ballads, James Murphy-ish dance beats, and even spoken word are used to showcase her unique voice and tell her tale of love and abuse. The album organizes itself as a shedding of skins for Lykke Li. On “Little Bit,” she confessions, “and for you I keep my legs apart, and forget about my tainted heart… .”
Lykke Li is halfway through her summer tour. She will be returning to the states in August, and coming out west on the Aug. 4th to play The Wiltern in LA. -TC
