What do you get when you combine a life spent bouncing from the northeast United States and Sweden with flying lotus, Santigold, Lauren Hill, and a digestible Lady SOV? Well apparently you get Downtown Records (Justice, Santigold, Spank Rock, Mos Def, etc) newest female addition, Mapei.
Earlier this year Mapei released her first EP, “CoCo Butter Diaries” on the indie hit encrusted, Downtown Records. The Ep is 4 short tracks and some of the songs borrow from older club anthems, but who isn’t these days? “Public Enemy” is weighty, electro-hop, dancehall take on the “Kryptonite” beat that I’m sure club heads are already re-mixing as I type.
Mapei manages to sneak in enough experimental hip-hop beats and dancehall sound to make this now familiar style her own.-TC
