Sometimes you find yourself watching an opening band and there’s a sudden urge to head outside for some fresh air or take an unnecessary bathroom break. This was not the case with North Carolina’s folk rock trio Megafaun. I saw them open for Akron Family a year ago and they nearly stole the show. Their music and live shows are far from boring with standout banjo, violins, vocal harmonies and unexpected arrangements that prevent them from being grouped with many other folk rock bands out there. Their shows can also end up with one or two of the band members half-naked, but regardless the audience stands mesmerized singing and clapping along with them in a trance. For a band that has played 250 shows in the past two years, this energy is no small feat.
Brad and Phil Cook (brothers)and Joe Westerlund have been playing in bands together since meeting at jazz camp as teenagers in Wisconsin twelve years ago. After their previous band DeYarmond Edison (with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon) came to an end, they started playing/experimenting with some new instruments and booked a week-long tour without having actually written any songs.Megafaun has never shyed away from a little improvisation, as is evident in some of the jam sessions that go on in any given show. Anyone who has seen them live can attest that welcoming that improvisational style seems to be working for them. Justin Vernon recently sang his praises of Megafaun’s newly released second album Gather, Form and Fly, calling it, “astonishing,” and that,” it boggles my spirit.” In short, check out this album and see this band if you can.
