To purchase a ticket to an electronica show can be somewhat of gamble. Will your hard-earned scrillas get you a nice view of a guy standing bored behind his computer or will there be an actual “show” show? In the case of the British electro-pop band Metronomy, you get your full money’s worth and then some (i.e. dance party galore).
Decked out in matching white pants and black shirts, the boys and girl of Metronomy had the crowd at first song. Their bouncing-off-the-walls energy was contagious as was their hypnotic light show (they each wore pre-synced chest lights) which captivated even the drunkest of the drunk. As the gentlemen in the crowd drooled over the female drummer’s impressive skills and easy-on-the-eyes looks, frontman Joseph Mount laid on his cheeky British charm. “Well Frisco, do you mind if I call you Frisco?,” he asked. Hell no! The crowd was too busy dancing their asses off to their 80’s synth-infused hits like “Heartbreaker,” “I’ve Got a Thing For You” and “Not Made for Love” from their latest album Night’s Out.
As the hour-long set came to an end, the audience was completely smitten (myself and fellow PlasticMilk SF staff writers included). A mini mosh pit ensued towards the front of the stage, impressive considering Metronomy is a dance-friendly band whose lyrics are often about the complexities of the heart. More than just master mixers and samplers, the members of Metronomy are serious musicians and it shows. There was some major shredding and bass lines going on throughout the set, not to mention an amazing saxophone solo. Much to the crowd’s liking, Mount decided not to waste everyone’s time and skipped leaving the stage before the encore!!! They ended the night’s memorable dance party with their New Order-esque song “On Dancefloors.” Appropriate indeed. -JM
