Metronomy

To purchase a ticket to an electronica show can be somewhat of gamble. Will your hard-earned scrillas get you a nice view of a guy standing bored behind his computer or will there be an actual “show” show? In the case of the British electro-pop band Metronomy, you get your full money’s worth and then some (i.e. dance party galore).

Decked out in matching white pants and black shirts, the boys and girl of Metronomy had the crowd at first song. Their bouncing-off-the-walls energy was contagious as was their hypnotic light show (they each wore pre-synced chest lights) which captivated even the drunkest of the drunk. As the gentlemen in the crowd drooled over the female drummer’s impressive skills and easy-on-the-eyes looks, frontman Joseph Mount laid on his cheeky British charm. “Well Frisco, do you mind if I call you Frisco?,” he asked. Hell no! The crowd was too busy dancing their asses off  to their 80’s synth-infused hits like “Heartbreaker,” “I’ve Got a Thing For You” and “Not Made for Love” from their latest album Night’s Out.

As the hour-long set came to an end, the audience was completely smitten (myself and fellow PlasticMilk SF staff writers included). A mini mosh pit ensued towards the front of the stage, impressive considering Metronomy is a dance-friendly band whose lyrics are often about the complexities of the heart. More than just master mixers and samplers, the members of Metronomy are serious musicians and it shows. There was some major shredding and bass lines going on throughout the set, not to mention an amazing saxophone solo. Much to the crowd’s liking, Mount decided not to waste everyone’s time and skipped leaving the stage before the encore!!! They ended the night’s memorable dance party with their New Order-esque song “On Dancefloors.” Appropriate indeed. -JM

The English often get a rep for being uptight and snobby, having their fair share of bands who take themselves a little too seriously(Oasis). But then there’s the electronic group Metronomy: the light-hearted, party boys (and girl) of England.  Joseph Mount and crew are the kind of people you want playing at your party. Trust that it will be a challenge not to shake your ass or bob your head when listening to anything Metronomy has touched.

Joseph Mount, Metronomy creator and main lad, knows a thing or two about how to make catchy, electro-pop music. While their first album Pip Paine (Pay The £5000 You Owe) was mostly sounds (Great track= “Black Eye / Burnt Thumb”), their second album Nights Out (Because Music) is more form-friendly with plenty of vocals and melodies. NME placed it on their “Top 10 albums of 2008” list. Tracks “Heartbreaker”and “On Dancefloors” are bound to make even the most dance-phobic, wallflowers get their indie shuffle on.

In addition to the Metronomy albums, Mount is a prolific remixer. Having remixed the likes of Lykke Li, Franz Ferdinand, Goldfrapp and CSS under the Metronomy name, he reinvents/re-energizes the songs with his glitchy beats and frenetic, “5 Hour Energy” effects.

Based on their blog, Mount and the rest of Metronomy appear to be much like their quirky, fun sound. Whether they are writing to Ne-Yo on a yellow sticky note asking him to listen to their album or posing with Karl Lagerfeld at a private fashion show (photo caption: “In the UK, some people say Metronomy are dweebs. But in Paris, we’re major dudes!”), it’s clear that they’re having a ball. The good news is that you can attend this ball in person. They are scheduled to play SF and LA in early October. Considering that their live shows include dance routines and synchronized light shows, it should be one hell of a party. -JM
